This debut historical novel takes readers to the time when California is still a new destination, America is extending its global reach, and men and women are taking to the skies. Life changes for the Hartle children when their prosperous parents die suddenly in 1901. Now it's 1908 and the three oldest—Anna, Addison and Purl—have come of age and inherited a considerable inheritance. They're in a hurry to leave their small Ohio village. Anna moves to Los Angeles and is successful in her new profession, but not in her choice of a husband. She experiences challenges she never dreamed of, but luck is on her side when she meets a cousin who founded a small California suburb which she named Hollywood. Addison is drawn to early aviation's inner circle when a friend who works for Glenn Curtiss exposes him to the adventure and risks including Curtiss's conflicts with the Wright brothers. Purl loses his inheritance and joins the army, serving in the Pacific helping to build defenses at little-known Corregidor and Pearl Harbor. He remains torn between returning home to Ohio and never going back. Despite distance, Anna, Addison, and Purl stay in contact and in each other's lives, caught up in historical events and with characters from Hollywood to Europe and the Pacific Rim. Meet famous film stars, aviators, and American heroes. Our many experiences include watching Roosevelt's Great White Fleet arrive in San Francisco, attending the first international air exhibitions in France and in the United States, visiting the opening of the Beverly Hills Hotel, and meeting a Titanic survivor. The siblings sometimes visit Ohio, but not for long. As Addison often expresses at the end of his letters, they are "Yours in a hurry."

I absolutely loved how this was based on a true story, sewn from the very own fabric, of Ann Otto’s family, and their footprint on American soil and in American skies. Although a fictional story, it does contain some factual information. The birth of the “Californian culture.” A time where California starts to twinkle on the world map. A time of evolutionary inventions, such as the phone, car, and heavier than air aircraft. Alexander Graham Bell, Curtiss and the Wright Brothers.
Having female pilots in my own family, I loved how she included the feminine side to aviation, which was very strong back then.
“Matilde and I have started flight school. I hope to earn my aviation license by fall. Blanche Scott, whom I recall you met, also flies at Mineola Field. Imagine three women flyers. I realize that you may be weary of talk of flying, and wonder why we continue given the risk, but it is a passion a challenge as is any other pursuit.”
Otto successfully transport you to the early 1900’s, into a strong European influenced culture post colonization, of the educated upper class. Personal letters intermixed throughout written in the first person. The structure to the plot was organized and very comprehensible.
Strong females, the history of aviation and its people, post industrial revolution and pre-depression, a time that is more often than not overlooked where many great inventions were discovered and put to the test. A great era of science and discovery, Ann Otto has created this beautiful tale of adventure, and life lessons.

Okay historical fiction.
This is a book that follows the lives of three siblings and their desire to leave the small town in Ohio they grew up in and explore the world. It is set between the years 1908-12 and the author does an excellent job of weaving real facts about the true risks of early aviation with man's fascination to fly and how the characters are affected by aviation. Very well written and a true joy to read.
I enjoyed reading this debut novel. I began to care about these people and their lives. The reader is left wondering what happened to these characters after the novel ends. (I know the daughter of the author and know how things eventually turned out. I'm not giving out any spoilers.) Because the author had real people in the novel. I now want to find out more about them.
I certainly enjoyed this historical novel. I liked the fact that I had not given much thought before to what it would be like to leave a large family and start a new life. I never thought about how Hollywood started or the beginnings of aviation but certainly thought about these topics during this read! It was written in a very personal way which made learning about all this enjoyable but also realistic.
For her first novel, Ann Otto has done a fabulous job of creating an exciting, fast-moving story of a family's journeys at the turn of the last century. For aviation buffs, you won't be disappointed; her detail and research is impeccable. I was hooked right off the bat and couldn't wait to see what was happening next to each of the main characters. Get this book - you won't be disappointed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of historical fiction! It follows 3 siblings as they leave their small Ohio town to make new lives for themselves in the early 1900s. The way the characters and their stories were presented made me feel as if I knew the Hartle clan personally. I'm still thinking about them. I also loved the interesting bits of US history weaved into the story, especially the early years of Hollywood and aviation. I highly recommend this story!
I enjoyed the book and the way fact and fiction were intertwined throughout the story. It was a fairly easy read that kept my interest, and I learned many new things about early Los Angeles/Hollywood, early aviation and the general history of the time period.
